About Chowan University

Chowan University is a private, Christian institution, affiliated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, located in Murfreesboro, North Carolina that was founded in 1848 by Dr. Godwin Cotton Moore. The institution's name means `people of the south`, and it was given in order to honor the Native American Algonquin Chowanook tribe.

Today, the institution offers more than 60 academic programs through its three schools: School of Arts and Sciences, School of Business and School of Education. The college is accredited to award Associate's and Bachelor's degrees.

Chowan University's athletic teams are called The Hawks, which compete in National Christian College Athletic Association. Also, they compete in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), in several sports, for both men and women. Their official colors are blue and white and their mascot's name is Murf the Hawk. In 2009, the Hawks mountain biking team won their first national championship.
